lbusdThe Long Beach Unified School District is home to 84 public schools in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon (on Catalina Island). Sections of Long Beach are also served by the school districts of ABC Unified School District, Paramount Unified School District, and Los Angeles Unified School District.

The Long Beach Unified School District has won the National Broad Prize for Urban Education, recognizing it as the U.S.’s best urban school system for increasing student achievement. It has been in the top 5 on five separate occasions for that prize as well. It is also one of the world’s top 20 school systems and in the top three in the United States for sustained and significant improvements. Newsweek even ranked seven of the high schools among the top 6% of U.S. high schools.

There are three colleges and universities that include:

  • California State University, which is one of the largest universities in California in terms of enrollment.
  • Long Beach City College is a community college with two separate campuses, one in Lakewood Village and the other in Central Long Beach.
  • DeVry University Long Beach which is in the Kilroy Airport Center.
